The leopard that was recently removed from the wild has begun eating. The predator underwent surgery at the Centre for the Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and Other Rare Animals and remains in serious condition.
Immediately after the surgery, the leopard was placed in a special closed cage, with a camera trap to monitor his condition. He has gradually begun to eat soft food that sits well with the emaciated animal. Experts note that the leopard shows defensive behaviour towards people, which is the appropriate response for a wild cat.
According to Yekaterina Blidchenko, an employee at Land of the Leopard and a zoologist at the rehabilitation centre, it is still too early to make predictions about the leopard's condition. Vets continue to monitor the animal. If the leopard's condition stabilises, then he will undergo another medical check in a few days.
The scientists believe that the spotted predator was injured in a conflict with another leopard. This can be seen from the type of wounds and the fur of what is likely another leopard in the claws of the animal.
In early March, the young male leopard was captured by hunting supervision workers near the Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve (managed by Land of the Leopard) near the rural town of Primorsky in the Khasan District. In grave condition, the predator was taken to the rehabilitation centre in the village of Alekseyevka. According to experts, the leopard is about 2.5 years old.
