ROMA, a male Far Eastern leopard who is about seven years old, lives near the Russian-Chinese border. In 2014, camera traps captured several images of him, and it appears that he is a healthy and active animal who is always on the go.
Rosatom, a partner in the presidential programme for the protection of rare animals, is the keeper of the leopard. In July 2015, the corporation announced a vote on a nuclear-related name for the wild cat on social networks (Facebook, VKontakte) and in the Strana Rosatom newspaper. At least 100 names were proposed, but ROMA won the most likes. ROMA was Lina Kostina's suggestion, and was approved by Sergei Kiriyenko, the director general of the Rosatom corporation. ROMA is not only a common male name but is also an abbreviation for "Russian peaceful atom."
