Founder and lead singer of the rock group Mumiy Troll; Russia's representative in the International Tiger Coalition
Ilya’s choice of name for Leo 11M has an interesting backstory: “Meamury was the name of one of Mumiy Troll’s albums. I coined the word to mean ‘reminiscences of past loves’. Some years later, my little daughters chose it as a name for one of the toy leopards they brought back from nature reserves in Primorye and South Africa. We thought Meamur would make a good name for a Far Eastern, or Amur, leopard. It would suit any feline, for that matter. It also captures the sound of Mumiy Troll’s music, which is essentially an endless seaside song.” Lagutenko is active in efforts to protect rare species. He has taken part in many charity events with his rock group Mumiy Troll, including the Save the Planet concert in Johannesburg, South Africa (2002), the online charity auction Musicians for Nature (2002), a campaign to protect Lake Baikal (2006), the St Petersburg Tiger Summit (2010), and a project launched to protect the Bikin River in the Primorye Territory (2011). In spring 2010, Ilya Lagutenko performed in a WWF commercial. He also takes part in the annual Tiger Day events in Vladivostok.
Since 2001 he has been a trustee of the Russian-British charity AMUR, created to help save the Amur tiger and Far Eastern leopard.
